Eleni Mandell

There's something about Eleni Mandell's music that strikes me as the perfect thing to listen to when driving around at night and getting into mischief. Not the small "gee, look at me run this red light" kind - more like the "I wonder where am I going to stow this body" kind of big, messy, oozing mischief. Something about the way her startlingly deep voice (think PJ Harvey) melts into the darkly seductive calypso beats, the sometimes slinky sometimes menacing cabaret songs, and bits which could spark a theme to some malevolent carnival. It's all wickedly fun. Now where am I going to stow this body... Or at least that's what I thought when listening to her first two albums - Wishbone and Thrill. Now she's gone and bent her voice to an album of country songs - and darn if it doesn't sound wonderful, too...
